Bess Truman
Bess Truman was our guest speaker at the
Community Services League Holiday Gala.
-Wonderful presentation
Elizabeth "Bess" Truman was probably
one of the most private of all the First
Ladies. In fact, she gave only one press
conference in her life. She left the
security of Independence, Missouri to
step into the limelight of Washington,
D.C. society but made it known that she
was first, a devoted wife and mother.
Bess Truman was a very gracious but no
nonsense lady. She had great influence
on her husband and his decisions in office.
Their lives relate the events during the
Truman era, including the dropping of
the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the upset
of Thomas Dewey and the firing of Douglas
MacArthur, during the Korean War.
It is said that Bess and Harry's relationship
was both a love story and an extaordinary
political partnership.
